      So glad to hear this. Yes, often in life drawing we tend to think that we have to draw the whole figure, when using the pose to focus on one area could result in a much better drawing. If it resonates, that's great!

    I mostly draw on 120 gr paper or 200 gr mix media. May say that 200 gr Mix Media paper was the thickest i ever had and best also. I draw as a hobby -pencil,ink,charcoal-. Thanks for the video

    FOR ME, INK DRAWING IS THE BEST. I LOVE TO DRAW AND SKETCH IN INK. I NORMALLY USE MICRON PENS AND BRUSH TIP PENS. I'LL USE A BRIGHT COLOR PEN OR BRUSH FOR UNDER SKETCHES AND BLACK FOR MY DETAILS. IT'S A LOT OF FUN AND YOU CAN DO MANY TYPES OF LINE SHADING/RENDERING. THERE'S REALLY NO WRONG OR RIGHT WAY TO SKETCH WITH IT. IT'S TOTALLY UP TO YOU WHAT YOU WANT TO SEE AND WHAT YOU WANT PEOPLE TO SEE. HAVE FUN WITH IT...ENJOY!!!

    This video nicely boils down my recent experience with life drawing, having been at it for about 7 years now, going through ups and downs. In one session, a week ago I did a long study (about 2 1/2 hours) and noticed my drawing looked a bit off. Somehow I had combined a bunch of techniques together from over the years but failed to get the essence of the figure into the drawing. I asked one of the best artists in the group for advice and he said pretty much all these points and showed me a bunch of his drawings. I suppose its like most art forms, you have to learn the fundamentals and all the technical stuff then forget them! :)

    I am working through your wonderful videos and learning so much, thank you. I am fascinated by how you constantly change your grip on the pencil to change your mark making. A video about this would be very instructive. Thanks again Siobhan.

    • @Drawing-Life
      @Drawing-Life 2 місяці тому

      So happy to hear this Tim, thanks for the feedback. I think mark making is so essential, and you're right its worthy of a video because it's nearly the most important aspect of a drawing practice. Only, it's hard to explain it on video, using photo reference. I'll give it a try though! I don't think about it consciously in the moment, but changing grip and using different marks is completely connected to seeing the gesture and understanding the emphasis in the particular pose, and that really comes with practice, but there are ways to get there fast, if you practice gesture a lot. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other questions! :)

    Well done Siobhan! As a passionate horse rider and watercolourist I am aware of the challenges in horse sketching. I find you sketched some very credible and fresh poses. I have often tried to draw my horse from life but, as you said, horses keep moving. Mine came along to see what I was doing from close. I often had the sensation that he tended to turn back when I was trying to draw him, so I usually come back with sketches from behind while grazing. I think I would need to spend hours before I can see him head up and looking at me😂

    Thanks so much for this video. As a complete beginner, this is exactly the approach I am trying to follow - drawing what I see without the use of a template.

    • @Drawing-Life
      @Drawing-Life 2 місяці тому

      Thanks Tim, love to hear this. A lot of people will tell you otherwise, but I believe it's way more important to learn how to draw naturally first and then move into more rigorous, template or structure approach. It's ALL about line confidence - this is the starting point most beginners miss completely. if you learn to control your line naturally and intuitively you will have way more success as you move to more careful studies. Thanks for watching!!
